Louisiana Tech toppled the North Texas Mean Green 42-36 in a defensive struggle in one of Friday’s semifinals. North Texas were the #1 seed in the West and the pre-tournament betting favorite.

UAB worked triple overtime to edge out the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 102-98 in the second semifinal. Middle Tennessee was the top seed from the East.

Totally Confusing

The over/under could be a very tricky bet on this game. On the one hand, UAB scored 102 points in the school’s semifinal win. The Blazers have gone over in each of their last four games and in nine of the past 12. They are the #1 scoring offense in C-USA (80.6 ppg).

However, the Bulldogs are defensive dynamos. Smothering North Texas and limiting the Mean Green to 36 points, that marked the ninth time this season the Bulldogs held a team under 60 points in a game and the second time they checked an opposing offense on less than 50 points.

Louisiana Tech’s last three games and five of the past six played by the Bulldogs all went under.

Bulldogs Clamp Down on Mean Green

The way Friday’s Bulldogs-Mean Green semifinal began certainly wasn’t the way it ended. Louisiana Tech opened 1-for-12 from the field. With 8:55 to go in the first half, North Texas led 10-2.

Then the tide turned on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs hit seven of their last 12 first-half shots. They went on a 15-0 run to lead 21-13 at the half.

It was 26-13 Lousiana Tech with 18:09 to go in the second half. Amazingly, the Bulldogs would connect on just four field goals the rest of the way. Their defense, though, was able to grind down the Mean Green. North Texas was limited to 24.1% shooting from the field and 16.7% from 3-point range.

The Bulldogs didn’t exactly shoot the lights out. Louisiana Tech hit 28.6% from the field and 27.8% from beyond the arc. Sophomore guards Keaston Willis and Cobe Williams each scored 12 points. Freshman forward Kenneth Lofton Jr contributed nine points while pulling down 12 rebounds.

Blazers Won’t Extinguish So Easily

Junior guard Jordan Walker, the C-USA Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, poured in 40 points in UAB’s triple-OT win over Middle Tennessee. Graduate student guard Michael Ertl added 26 points. He hit six field goals from 3-point range.

UAB trailed by six points with 39 seconds to play in the second OT and battled back to force the decisive third extra session. The Blazers were dominant in transition, outscoring Middle Tennessee 19-10 in points off turnovers and 27-13 in fast-break points.

North Texas owned the top C-USA record (16-2) but were just the #13 scoring offense (69.4 ppg) in the conference. Besides being the top C-USA offense, UAB is also the #2 defense (66.1 ppg).

UAB is 1-0-1 ATS as a favorite of three points or less. Louisiana Tech has covered and won outright two in a row in this tourney as a betting underdog.

The Blazers whipped the Bulldogs twice already this season. UAB were 87-74 winners on March 5 and took an 83-76 verdict on Jan. 22.

Pick: UAB Blazers -3 (-110).
