Ed Quigley will be here all four days of the Cheltenham Festival with his strongest fancies.
An almighty roar of frenzied punters and racing fanatics will send them on their way, as the tapes go up for the start of the 2022 Cheltenham Festival.
Ed Quigley’s Tip – Mighty Potter (Cheltenham 13:30)
The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle looks an absolute belter of a renewal, with a cogent case being made for each of the protagonists. As a win/place alternative on Matchbook, I do think Grade 1 winner Mighty Potter has to come into the equation. I don’t think he jumped with any great alacrity at Leopardstown last time out, but still got the job done in the manner of a horse with a serious engine, and dismissed a very smart yardstick from his stable in the form of Three Stripe Life in the process.
In truth, if Dysart Dynamo and co blaze the trail, he could get taken off his feet, as he looks a proper stayer in the making, but the end to end gallop should allow him to settle and bring his stamina reserves into play.
If he is still within striking distance jumping two out, I am sure he will fire up the Cheltenham Hill when others have cried enough – it is just a case of how much ground he has to make up. I envisage he will probably have to do a ‘Noland’ or an ‘Al Ferof’ to win, so he may be one for in-running players to keep an eye on.
It would be far from a shock if he traded bigger in running on Matchbook before coming home with a wet sail. All in all, this is a race to get the pulse pumping, and I suspect Mighty Potter could be a key ingredient in what looks a very spicy dish to start things off.

Ed Quigley’s Tip – Corach Rambler (Cheltenham 14:50)
Corach Rambler is a horse I have been very keen on for the Ultima for some time; in fact, I think his fall in the Reynoldstown was a blessing in disguise as it has protected his mark. Quietly ridden, he was just creeping into contention when departing five-out, and off a mark of 140, I think he is still underestimated.
Novices have a good record in the Ultima, with Coo Star Sivola (2018), Un Temps Pour Tout, (2016) Holywell (2014) and Wichita Lineman (2009) all winning this in recent times.
What you lack in experience, you often make up for by having a few pounds up your sleeve over the accessor. A winner at Cheltenham back in December (admittedly on the New Course), the idiosyncrasies of the track will hold no fears and he looks versatile in regards to underfoot requirement and is my win and place player here.

Ed Quigley’s Tip – Telmesomethinggirl (Cheltenham 16:10)
Henry De Bromhead made it very clear that it was a case of “working backwards from the Mares’ Hurdle” in his early autumn stable bulletins in regards to Telmesomethinggirl and after simmering for much of this season, I think she is being brought to the boil nicely.
She stormed up the hill to win the Novice version of this 12 months ago, and I expect a return to this venue to be the ideal fillip for her.
Her third-place finish at Leopardstown when conceding weight to Royal Kahala and Heaven Help Us is smart form and I think back off a level playing field, she is the one they all have to beat here.
