Easy Route to the AFCON Final
Senegal’s route to the final has been a relatively straightforward one; one that culminated in a comfortable 3-1 semifinal win over Burkina Faso on Tuesday. Second-half goals from Abdou Diallo and Bamba Dieng had given Les Lions de la Téranga what looked like a winning lead before Blati Touré pulled one back for Les Etalons. This made for a nervy few minutes before the points were sealed by Mane three minutes from time.

Their progress in Group B was steady if unspectacular but enough to get them comfortably through to the knockout phase as group winners. An opening day win over Zimbabwe – achieved by a Mane penalty in the seventh minute of injury time – was their only win of the group, with the games against Guinea and Malawi both ending goalless.
First AFCON Win for Senegal?
A win over the outsiders from Cape Verde was trickier than expected in the round-of-16, with Mane’s 63rd-minute strike being the only goal of the game until Bamba Dieng sealed the deal two minutes into injury time. This led to a quarterfinal tie against Equatorial Guinea which the Senegalese negotiated comfortably – winning 3-1 with goals from Famara Diédhiou, Cheikhou Kouyaté and Ismaïla Sarr.

The 3-1 win over Burkina Faso in the semifinal has set them up nicely for the chance to win the AFCON for the first time ever, although they have made the final twice before – in 2002 when they lost on penalties to Cameroon and in 2019 when they were beaten 1-0 by Algeria.

Penalty Shootout Win Over Cameroon
Egypt’s route to the final was achieved the hard way – via either extra time or penalty shootouts in each of their three knockout matches. Against the hosts, Cameroon, in the semifinal, they were able for the third time in succession to hold their nerve, after the 90 minutes regular time plus 30 minutes extra-time ended goal-less. It set them up for their 10th final, having won the trophy on seven occasions and finishing runners-up twice.

Interestingly, it was a tournament that began badly for Egypt when on opening day they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Nigeria – Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the only goal. They bounced back well though and secured a place in the knockout phase with consecutive 1-0 wins over Guinea-Bissau and Sudan – the goals coming from Salah and Mohamed Abdelmonem.
No Knockout Wins in Regular Time
The knockout phase was anything but straightforward for Egypt who effectively made it five draws in succession (in regular time) and it was mainly thanks to their prowess from the penalty spot that they made it to their second final in two tournaments. A goalless draw after 120 minutes in their round-of-16 game against Ivory Coast was won 5-4 on penalties before their quarterfinal against Morocco was finally decided thanks to a Trézéguet penalty in the first half of extra-time.

Their semifinal against Cameroon was another goalless affair for the full 120 minutes but their excellence from the penalty spot again came to their rescue. But five games without a win in regular time and three rounds of extra-time have not left the Egyptians in an especially good place together with the fact they will have 24 hours less than the Senegalese to prepare for the final.

Senegal vs Egypt Pick
Egypt’s journey to the final has been exhausting and not helped by them playing their semifinal 24 hours later than their opponents on Sunday. This could be a telling factor and is why, for me, the value here is for the Senegal win which is still in plus money.
Picks: Senegal to win (+125) / Under 1.5 goals (+114)
