The New York Knicks begin a lengthy West Coast road trip on Saturday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM EST at Crypto.com Arena.

New York continues to struggle, most recently losing to surging Memphis Grizzlies at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. As for the Lakers, they fell to their rivals, the Clippers, on Thursday. In the process, Carmelo Anthony got hurt while LeBron James remains out with knee soreness.

This will be the second meeting of the campaign between these two legendary franchises, with the Knicks coming out on top in November by a score of 106-100.

Knicks Looking to Start Road Trip With a Bang

Things aren’t pretty for New York right now, going just 3-7 in their last 10 games. Unfortunately, this is the start of a daunting road trip with numerous tough matchups. After leaving LA, the Knicks visit the Jazz, Nuggets, and Warriors. That being said, Saturday’s contest is a clear opportunity to get started on the right foot, especially because of the key figures sidelined for the Lakers.

Wednesday saw Tom Thibodeau’s group come up against the red-hot Grizzlies, eventually losing by 12. While they trailed by double-digits for most of the night, the Knicks made it more interesting in the fourth when Immanuel Quickley drained back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to five. That didn’t last long though as Memphis eventually pulled away for good.

It was a rather poor shooting night for New York, posting a dismal 33% clip from downtown and 43% overall. Their mistakes also proved costly, with the Grizz translating 15 turnovers into 17 points. Evan Fournier surprisingly led the way offensively with 30 while RJ Barrett had 23 points. Four of their five starters ended in double-figures and the Knicks will need more of that consistency in LA.

Things Looking Grim For Los Angeles

Between their inability to play defense and stay healthy, the Lakers are in shambles. LeBron is still out and then Melo left early on Thursday with a hamstring injury. He’s now listed as day-to-day. That’s two of LA’s best offensive weapons unavailable right now, which is only going to make matters worse. After all, they’re already under .500.

However, there were a couple of positive takeaways from their loss to the Clippers. The Lakers were down 94-78 late in the third but chipped away at the lead, scoring 12 unanswered points. The fourth quarter was truly a whirlwind of emotions as well, with both teams having the lead at different points throughout. Frank Vogel’s squad had the chance to win it at the buzzer after Reggie Jackson’s nifty lay-up, but Anthony Davis saw his floater rim out.

Nevertheless, it was a gritty performance from the Lakers considering they were down by a substantial amount. AD was brilliant, dropping 30 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in the loss. Malik Monk also poured in 21 while Russell Westbrook collected 17 points including a clutch jumper in the last minute of the final period.

Knicks vs Lakers Prediction

Both of these teams lack consistency and I honestly shy away from ever taking the Lakers. But, they really did show some fight against the Clippers, with the bench also stepping up and producing. The Knicks are also just 11-13 on the road, while LA is 16-12 at home. Even without Bron and Melo, I think you’ll see AD have another big night and lead his team to a much-needed win over a New York squad who just look absolutely lost right now.
