There is a 64-player draw for the tournament and there are no first-round byes. This year’s tournament has all Top 20 players competing, including former World No.1’s.

Odds as of April 26th at DraftKings.

It should come as no surprise that World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is the strong favorite to win the tournament. And 2021 champion Aryna Sabalenka is in the mix with +1400 odds.

Defending Champion

As mentioned, Sabalenka is defending her title. She went on to win her first clay-court title and fourth WTA 1000 title when she defeated Ashleigh Barty 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

Awarded the third seed for this year’s tournament, the Belarusian will open her tournament up against American Amanda Anisimova.

The 23-year old has pretty much flown under the radar for the majority of the year, due to less than ideal showings at tournaments up until this month. It was just at the Stuttgart Open last week that she had a finals appearance, but loss to Swiatek in straight sets. This was her best showing of the year, and she’ll look to continue that momentum into the Madrid Open.

2022 Favorite

If you’re not paying attention to Swiatek’s career at the moment, what are you doing? The 20-year old is unbeatable at the moment, winning four consecutive titles. She’s currently on a 23-match win streaks, which ties Naomi Osaka’s from 2021.

Last year she lost to eventual finalist Barty in straight sets in the round of 16, and seems to be a completely different player than she was last year. This year she’ll open her tournament up against a qualifier, and will look to continue her momentum and streak on a surface she first found success on. It was the 2020 French Open that put the Pole on the map.

Can she continue this streak, or will fatigue catch up with her? She is hands down a player who has arguably played the most tennis over the past couple of months.

Who to Watch

A player to watch is Paula Badosa. With +1600 odds, she only has the fifth best odds to win, and she’s playing in front of a home crowd. Not to mention, she’s the new crowned World No. 2.

Last year, Badosa was also stopped by Barty, but in the semifinals. This year she’s coming off a semifinal appearance at the Stuttgart Open, and will open her tournament up against Veronika Kudermetova. Kudermetova is a tough first round opponent.

Best Bet

Do you really bet against Swiatek here? Probably not.

No one can beat her right now. And the last person who did was Jelena Ostapenko back on February 16th at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

There are some potential tough matches down the road here in Madrid for Swiatek, which cause her some trouble, including a potential third round matchup against three-time Madrid champion Petra Kvitova. But really she drew a relatively straightforward map to the finals.

In the bottom half look for Sabalenka or Badosa to make a splash. The two are in different quarters, but the same half, setting up a possible exciting semifinal.

Bet Bet: Iga Swaitek (+140)

Longer Bet: Aryna Sabalenka (+1400)
