UConn vs Xavier Odds and Picks (Feb. 11)

Both teams look to begin late-season pushes when #24 Connecticut visits #25 Xavier in a Big East game at 7:00 p.m. ET Friday at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.

UConn (16-6/7-4 Big East/3-3 road) ended a two-game losing streak with an 80-72 victory over visiting Marquette on Tuesday. Xavier (16-7/6-6 Big East/11-3 home) lost its second straight and for the fourth time in the last six games when it dropped a 73-71 decision at Seton Hall on Wednesday.

Xavier is a 1.5-point favorite in a game that will be televised by FS1 and has an implied win probability of 55.56% as -120 choices on the moneyline.

Oddsmakers see UConn and Xavier as roughly equal national-championship threats. The Huskies’ Final Four odds sit at +1300, followed closely by the Musketeers at +1550.

Connecticut Betting Outlook

UConn had lost three games in a row against the spread until covering as 6.5-point favorites over Marquette. The Huskies are 11-11 ATS overall this season and also .500 on the road at 3-3.

Adama Sanogo continued to show why he is one of the Big East’s top big men with a fine performance Tuesday. The sophomore forward had 24 points and 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and fifth 20-point game.

He also had an assist.

For the season, Sanogo is averaging 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots. He is second in the Big East in boards and blocks.

Sanogo scored 14 points in the first half when UConn built a 38-24 lead on 59% shooting.

Senior guard Tyrese Martin also helped the Huskies play a physical game as he contributed 18 points, 15 rebounds and three assists. Martin notched his third double-double and was a big reason Connecticut held a huge 46-27 rebounding offensive advantage, including 14 off the offensive glass that led to 20 second-chance points.

Martin is averaging 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Leading scorer R.J. Cole was held to nine points on 3-of-11 shooting, including going 1 for 5 on three-point attempts. It was a rare off night for the senior guard, who has averages of 16.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

Cole is fifth in the conference in scoring and third in assists for the Huskies, whose 113.8 points per 100 possessions rank 22nd nationally in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency.

Xavier Betting Outlook

While Xavier lost outright to Seton Hall, the three-point underdog Musketeers were spread winners for just the two time in their last nine games. Xavier’s season ATS record is 12-11, including 4-3 on the road.

Junior forward Jack Nunge made 9 of 12 shots for 22 points, giving him his fourth game of the season with at least 20.

However, Xavier could not overcome a 37-27 halftime deficit, though it did get within one point in the final minute. The Musketeers have trailed at the break ion eight of their last nine games.

In his first season since transferring from Iowa, Nunge is averaging 12.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots.

Senior guard Paul Scruggs had an outstanding performance with 21 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. He also made all eight free throw attempts.

Scruggs has been stuffing the stat categories all season with averages of 12.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.5 steals.

Sophomore Colby Jones is also having a good statistical 2021-22 with 10.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals a game. He is fifth in the conference in rebounding.

Junior forward Zach Freemantle fouled out with 13:39 remaining against Seton Hall. He finished with four points and one rebound after entering the game with averages of 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Xavier shot 51.1% (24 of 47) but made just 4 of 14 (28.6%) three-point tries and were outrebounded 41-28. The Musketeers came into the game leading the Big East with a .766 defensive rebounding percentage.

UConn-Xavier Prediction

This is just the fourth game between the schools with UConn leading the all-time series 2-1. The Huskies notched an 80-72 victory last Feb. 13 at Xavier behind 24 points and seven assists from Cole and 15 points and nine rebounds from Martin.

Freemantle had a monster game in a losing effort with 30 points and 15 rebounds.

With the feeling this game will go down to the wire, go with UConn and the points coming off a strong effort Tuesday.
