- Detroit were 3-2 shootout winners in the club’s last visit to Pittsburgh on Jan. 28
- Only three NHL teams have won fewer road games than the Red Wings (9-19-3)
The last time the Detroit Red Wings visited Pittsburgh to face the Penguins, the Wings did something unusual – they won.
The Wings captured a 3-2 shootout verdict on Jan. 28. It was Detroit’s first win at Pittsburgh since 2017. This season, the Red Wings are 9-19-3 on the road. Only three NHL teams are showing fewer wins away from home this season.
Oddsmakers are not counting on history repeating itself as Detroit once again arrives in the Steel City. The Penguins are solid -315 home favorites over the Red Wings. NHL betting trends show that Detroit is 3-1 against the puck line over the past four games.

Illness Impacting Red Wings, Penguins
An illness sweeping through the Detroit dressing room is impacting the team’s lineup. Filip Zadina returned Saturday after missing a game. Goalie Thomas Greiss (upper-body injury), defensemen Marc Staal (undisclosed) and Danny DeKeyser (UBI) and forwards Givani Smith (undisclosed), Robby Fabbri (knee), Mitchell Stephens (ankle) and Carter Rowney (lower-body injury) are out.
Mike Sullivan says Evgeni Malkin still didn’t feel well today with his non-COVID illness. He anticipates him being a game-time decision tomorrow.

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (illness) missed Friday’s game and is uncertain for Sunday. Forward Kasper Bjorkqvist was recalled on an emergency basis from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Forwards Jason Zucker (LBI) and Brock McGinn (UBI) and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu (LBI) are out.
Will Red Wings Roll With Pickard?
Detroit couldn’t strike against the Lightning on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Tampa Bay. However, what’s left to be determined is whether Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill is a believer in lightning striking twice in the same place?
Detroit’s Jan. 26 win at Pittsburgh was backstopped by the 36-save performance of third-string goalie Calvin Pickard. Pickard was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Friday after Thomas Greiss was injured in a collision in Thursday’s game against the New York Islanders. Alex Nedeljkovic started Saturday against the Lightning and Blashill rarely plays the same goalie in back-to-back games.
Red Wings vs Penguins Projected Starting Goalies
Team | Goalie | Record | SV% | GAA |
---|---|---|---|---|
Red Wings | Calvin Pickard | 1-1-0 | .915 | 2.90 |
Penguins | Tristan Jarry | 32-13-6 | .921 | 2.32 |
Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry shares the NHL lead in wins (32) with Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilveskiy and is a longshot contender in the Vezina Trophy odds. Friday’s loss to the Rangers ended Jarry’s personal five-game winning streak.
Jarry is 7-2-0 over his last nine decisions. He’s showing a 2.29 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage over that span.
Red Wings vs Penguins Pick & Prediction
Pittsburgh has taken points from eight of the past 11 games and are 6-2-3 during the month of March. However, the Pens are 0-1-1 in the past two games and coming home off a dismal performance in a 5-1 loss at the New York Rangers.
Carter on the team mood today after last night’s loss: “It’s definitely still on our minds. That was probably our worst performance of the year. It’s something that we’ve addressed… We can’t dwell on it for too long. You need to learn from it and get back to work tomorrow.” pic.twitter.com/kANLaIfv3n

The Red Wings are 3-6-1 SU in the second game of back-to-backs this season. They’ve collected points in successive contests just once over the past 24 games.
