Purdue vs Texas Picks, Odds, and Spread – Boilermakers 3.5-Point March Madness Favorites

Purdue faces Texas in a Round 2 game Sunday, at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Game time has yet to be determined.

Texas (22-11) is seeded sixth for this second-round tournament game from the East region. They are also ranked 25th in the nation as they face the third-seed Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue was ranked 10th in the nation in the final AP poll.

Purdue is a 3.5-point favorite over Texas and, at -165 on the moneyline, has an implied win probability of 62.26%.

 

Texas upended Virginia Tech on Friday by a score of 81-73. It was the Longhorns’ first win in the NCAA Tournament since 2014. By contrast, Purdue made at least the Sweet 16 three years in a row (2017-2019) before suffering a first-round upset to North Texas last year.

The winner gets a date in the Sweet Sixteen of the March Madness bracket later in the week against either Murray State or Saint Peter’s. The Longhorns were +1250 in the East Region Final Four odds pre-tournament and are now +1200 heading into Sunday.

Purdue Betting Outlook

With an easy Round One win, Purdue saw its March Madness championship odds shorten from +2150 down to +1450. This was also the first time in 11 games the Boilermakers covered the spread. They had lost 10 consecutive losses ATS.

Sophomore guard Jaden Ivey leads the way with a 17.4 point-per-game average. He is also shooting 46.2% from the field while playing 31.2 minutes per game. Those minutes have been consistent and Ivey rewarded Matt Painter and Purdue on Friday.

Ivey has been pretty consistent over his last 13 games. The guard topped 20 points seven times in that span, and also posted seven games with four or more assists.

The guard paced Purdue as they pulled out to a 13-point halftime lead over Yale. Yale never got too close in the second half either as the Boilermakers continued to extend its lead. Zach Edey was able to rack up a good deal of his second-half points from the charity stripe. Overall, he shot 8-of-10 from the foul line en route to 16 points.

The victory was the first double digit win for the Boilermakers in seven games. Both Ivey and Edey were rested. Edey was considerably more rested as he played just 20 minutes while Ivey saw 28 minutes of action. Expectations are that the duo will play more against Texas.

It was all about depth too, as Trevion Williams picked up 10 rebounds, eight points and four assists. Caleb Furst provided an offensive surge off the bench with 10 points in just 21 minutes.

The forward play for Purdue has been as vital as the guard play of Ivey. Without those forwards, the Boilermakers are just not the same team.

Edey’s play is not timid and rubs off on the rest of his front court mates. Texas may have its work cut out for them on Sunday.

Texas Betting Outlook

Texas proved many pundits wrong by not only winning on Friday over Virginia Tech but covering the first-round game as well. The Longhorns even exceeded offensive expectations with 81 points in the victory.

They are led by their senior five —  a group of two forwards and three guards that complement each other. Against Yale, it was Andrew Jones and Marcus Carr who combined for 36 points to lead Texas to a win.

A Carr halftime buzzer-beater shot turned this game. He got his three-point shot off just before 00.0 hit, resulting in a two point lead. Texas never relinquished that lead and even pulled ahead by double digits at times.

This looked nothing like the Texas team which sputtered over its final three games of the regular season. The Longhorns shot well from three, going 10-for-19 (53%), and shot 27-for-57 (47%) from two-point range. Texas shot 77% from the foul line.

That is where one wonders what havoc could the three guards cause against Purdue. Jones, Timmy Allen and Carr can all cause matchup problems for the Boilermakers.

Texas must keep shooting well from the perimeter to set up their inside game. If the Longhorns do go cold for extended periods, that likely spells elimination.

Again, Allen and the guards could pull this off.

The game will be close. The best March Madness betting strategy here is to lay the points with the Longhorns.
