When it comes to winning the starting quarterback job for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is Mason Rudolph going to mount a successful challenge? Will Dwayne Haskins regain his college form and with it, the Pittsburgh starting QB position?

For the first time in nearly two decades, there’s uncertainty under center for the Steelers in Pennsylvania. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh’s #1 QB since the 2004 season, recently announced his retirement from the game.

Is Pittsburgh likely to fill the position from within, or will the Steelers reach outside the organization to find their new QB? Could they opt to select their QB of the future in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft?

Steelers Ready To Run With Rudolph

Rudolph has started 10 games for the Steelers over the past three seasons. What he hasn’t done is left much of an impression suggesting he’s the future answer at QB for Pittsburgh.

At this stage of his NFL career, Rudolph is best remembered as the guy who Cleveland’s Myles Garrett nearly decapitated with his own helmet. Or maybe Rudolph’s claim to fame is that his main squeeze is Canadian tennis diva Genie Bouchard.

Either way, he’s left with plenty of work to do to supplant the Red Nosed Reindeer as the most popular Rudolph in the Steel City.

In his only start last season, Rudolph scraped out a 16-16 tie with the Detroit Lions. At the time, the Lions were the NFL’s lone winless team. Rudolph has thrown  for 16 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. He’s 5-4-1 as an NFL starter.

Can Haskins Resurrect His Career?

Haskins was given every chance to win the Steelers’ backup job from Rudolph last season. He failed to do so.

Still, even though he didn’t take a single regular-season snap in 2021, Steelers GM Kevin Colbert indicated that they will tender Haskins and want him back for 2022. Again, he’ll be provided with a shot to unseat Rudolph.

Selected 15th overall by Washington in the 2019 NFL Draft, Haskins started 16 games for the club in 2019-20. He was 3-10 with a dismal 74.4 passer rating. He threw for 12 TD, was picked off 14 times and was eventually released

Haskins was a standout in college at Ohio State. The Steelers like how he looked while running the scout team for them last season. That’s why they’re willing to give him another chance. Clearly, though, Haskins is starting at best as #2 on Pittsburgh’s QB depth chart.

Steelers Will Bring In A Veteran QB

The Steelers are also confirming that there will be four QBs in camp this summer. One of them figures to be an NFL veteran.

It won’t be one of Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh isn’t about to spend the kind of football capital that would be required to acquire a QB of this stature. Look for the Steelers to sign a journeyman, someone like Marcus Mariota or Mitchell Trubisky.

Even so, history shows that they are unlikely to win the starting job. Since 1970, Pittsburgh has played 809 NFL regular-season games. Just 98 of them were started by a QB who wasn’t home grown. That’s 12.11%.

Tommy Maddox, in 2002-03, is the only Pittsburgh #1 QB during a season over that span who didn’t begin his NFL career with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh Could Draft a QB

Sorry Steelers fans but Pitt QB sensation Kenny Pickett figures to be off the draft board when Pittsburgh steps up to the podium to make the 20th overall selection.

However, there will be other QBs available. Word is that the Steelers brass spent plenty of quality time with Liberty QB Malik Willis at the Senior Bowl.

Roethlisberger and Terry Bradshaw, the two most successful QBs in franchise history, were both first-round picks.

Job Is Rudolph’s To Lose

Earlier this week, Colbert stated that were the NFL season to start today, Rudolph would be their #1 QB.

It truly would be shocking were that not to be the case. Pittsburgh’s history shows this isn’t a team that’s going to make a big splash in search of a QB. They’ll give Rudolph every chance to show he’s the guy so right now betting on Rudolph would be your best NFL betting strategy.
