The Monte-Carlo Masters is one of the oldest tournaments in tennis, and will take place this week. It is a Masters 1000 tournament, and it’s the first of three on clay surface.
This week fans will see Novak Djokovic back in play, and he is the favorite to win.

Rafael Nadal will not be participating this year due to injury, making it Djokovic’s tournament to lose. Nadal is the most successful player at this tournament, having won it 11 times before, setting an Open Era record.
The Return of Djokovic
Djokovic will be participating in Monte-Carlos, which will be his second tournament of the year. His first was in Dubai, where he withdrew in the quarterfinals.
The Serb has found success here in the past, hoisting up the trophy in both 2013 and 2015. And without Nadal in the mix this year, he’ll be looking for his third.

The first seed will be receiving a bye in the first round, and will open his tournament up against either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Marcos Giron. It looks like his tournament won’t really becoming challenging until the round of 16 or even the quarterfinals .
The Defending Champion
Tsitsipas, the defending champion is seeded third and listed at +600 odds to win the tournament. As the third seed, he will also be receiving a bye in the first round, and will open his tournament up against either Fabio Fognini or Arthur Rinderknech in the round of 32.
The Greek had a pretty good start to the year, with a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, and final appearance at ATP Rotterdam, but has been struggling as of late. Tsitsipas has yet to make it past the Round of 16 in his last two tournament showings.
He’s not exactly in the same place he was this time last year, but will still be a force in France.

Who to Watch
Aside from Djokovic, who will be without a doubt drawing a lot of attention, there are a few other players to watch out for.
Carlos Alcaraz are two players that could go deep into the tournament, and possibly end some other’s tournament early. Alcaraz drew the same quarter as Djokovic, and could see him in the quarterfinals.

18-year old Alcarez is coming off a title win in Miami, and could very easily give Djokovic a run if they were to go head-to-head in the quarterfinals. Make sure to keep an eye out how he’s playing.
Fourth seed, and Miami Open finalist, Ruud has a relatively straightforward path to the final eight. He’s already won a total of eight titles on clay surface, and will be looking to extend that number. Again, he’s someone that might not get tested until the quarters or even the semis.
Best Bet
It seems like if it’s not Djokovic, it’s Alcaraz right now.
Alcaraz is just in better form at the moment. Djokovic will definitely have a bit of rust to play off, but it won’t take long. The Serb is No. 1 in the world for a reason, and is bound to bounce back fairly easily. But it is possible it’s not this tournament.
For that reason, look for Alcaraz to take advantage, and carve out a path to the finals. If he were to beat Djokovic in that potential quarterfinal matchup, the competition continues to be tough, with the possibility of Ruud, Tsitsipas and Jannick Sinner.
Miami was a big tournament for the Spaniard. If the 18-year old’s momentum from Miami carries over, and he’s able to channel what was going on there, all eyes will be on him from the beginning. His path to the final will be just as much physical as it will be mental, as he’s gaining more and more attention in the tennis world.
