In a conference full of Big Ten and Wooden Award player of the year, candidates, Wisconsin’s Johnny Davis has played himself onto the short list, although it was hard to see until the games began. Davis did not start any of the Badgers’ 31 games a year ago.

A sleek 6’5 sophomore guard, Davis is averaging 20.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, one of the few players in Division I who leads his team in all three categories. Davis scored the final 13 Wisconsin points in a 74-69 victory at Indiana on Tuesday. The Badgers trailed 66-61 with 3:52 left.

Davis is third in the league in scoring behind Iowa power forward Keegan Murray (23.3) and Illinois center Kofi Cockburn (21.4). Cockburn leads the league in rebounding (11.3), and Murray (8.4) and Davis (8.3) rank third and fourth.

DraftKings lists Davis and Murray at +1200 to win the Wooden Award, tied for the fourth-best odds. Cockburn (+600) is second.

Davis has played big  big games. He had 37 points in 74-69 victory over No. 5 Purdue on Jan. 3, 30 points in a 65-63 win over No. 14 Houston on Nov. 23 and 30 in a 74-65 over Indiana the last time out Tuesday, adding 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double.

UM in NCAA Tournament Field … Today

Wisconsin is a lock to make the NCAA tournament, and Michigan is among the several Power Six programs that can control its destiny down the stretch.

The Wolverines’ 84-79 road win at Iowa on Thursday prompted ESPN to include them in their “last four in” category, along with North Carolina. Creighton and Memphis.

Early losses to Central Florida and Minnesota hurt, but the Wolverines have won eight of their last 11, losing only to Michigan State, Purdue and Ohio State, the first two on the road.

Michigan in No. 31 in the NCAA Net rankings, up six spots after its victory over Iowa, ahead of Marquette, Wake Forest and North Carolina, among others. The Wolverine lost to net No. 45 UNC in the Big Ten/ACC challenge Dec. 1.

The Wolverines have beaten Purdue and Iowa in a challenging stretch run that includes nine straight games against Big Ten first division teams, although four of the final five — Rutgers, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa — are at Crisler Center.

Dickinson, Diabate Power Michigan

Sophomore center 7’1 center Hunter Dickinson leads Michigan in scoring (17.9) and rebounds (8.3), and he averaged 22.2 points during a recent nine-game stretch to help the Wolverines back into the bubble chase.

Freshman 6’11 Moussa Diabate (9.5 points, 5.8 rebounds) has joined Dickinson recently as a tandem force inside. Diabate had a career-high 28 points against Iowa, two games after his previous career high of 15 in the win over Purdue.

Diabate, ranked as the No. 11 recruit in the high school class of 2021, was 12 of 15 from the field against the Hawkeyes. Dickinson had 14 points, nine rebounds and a season-high seven assists. Guards Eli Brooks (13 points, five assists) and DeVante’ Jones (11 points, 10 rebounds, five assists) chipped in at Iowa.

Michigan vs Wisconsin Prediction

Wisconsin will have the best player on the floor today, but … The Badgers’ offense is inconsistent after Johnny Davis, their bigs are not a good match against Dickinson and Diabate in their current form, and they are no bargain at home. Michigan has played well here in the recent past, and the Wolverines are the play here.

The pick: Michigan +3 (-120)
