The third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying is heating up. Canada, USA and Mexico occupy the three automatic places as expected, but Panama are keeping the pressure on, sitting just one point behind the US and Mexico.

Panama and Mexico meet for the second time in the group in Mexico City on February, 2nd. It was a 1-1 draw in the first meeting on September, 8th last year with Jesus Corona rescuing a point for Mexico with a late equaliser.

Mexico is far from guaranteed of a place in Qatar — this is reflected in their +10000 World Cup odds. It’s a price they share with Nigeria and Switzerland.

Pressure on El Tri

Aiming to qualify for an eighth consecutive World Cup, Mexico are under pressure following a goalless draw with Costa Rica. El Tri finds itself in a rut with just one win from their last six matches, four of which were in World Cup qualifying.

Mexico came from behind to beat 10 man Jamaica a couple of matches ago, with an 83rd-minute goal from Alexis Vega snatching all three points. Their home form is strong throughout World Cup qualifying too, which bodes well for Wednesday’s visit of Panama. They have eight points and just two goals conceded from their four home matches in the final round thus far.

This isn’t quite must-win for Mexico, but with a match against the USA to come in March, dropping points will leave them teetering. Fortunately, they can look back on a strong record against Panama — they have won nine of their last 11, drawing the other two.

Panama on the Charge

Where Mexico have stuttered, Panama have hit their stride at the right time, winning three of their last four qualifiers. A defeat to Costa Rica last Friday was a setback, but they showed resilience to come from behind against Jamaica in their next match.

The visitors are at almost full strength for Wednesday’s match. Andres Andrade is the only injury concern after going off in the first half against Jamaica. Mexico, meanwhile, are without Luis Rodriguez and Hector Moreno, with the duo suspended after accumulating too many yellow cards.

Panama have traditionally struggled in this fixture, winning just five times in 39 meetings. The last of those victories was in 2013. Their away record of late is patchy too, with their only away wins in this phase coming against the two teams at the bottom of the group. Still, the form book suggests this is a great opportunity for Los Canaleros to improve their record against Mexico.

Mexico vs Panama Pick

The moneyline doesn’t look a great option for either team here, so we’re diving into Asian handicaps and pointspreads.

Panama have only lost by multiple goals once in their last 13 matches. While they have three defeats by two of more goals to Mexico since the 2018 World Cup, the hosts’ recent goal scoring issues makes it hard to back them at -1.5.

La Marea Roja made it difficult for Mexico when the teams met in September. Gerardo Martino’s team had 56% possession, but just four shots on target to Panama’s three. They have registered 17 shots on target across their last four qualifiers, and were unable to create much against Costa Rica.

Panama might still come away empty handed, but they are solid enough defensively to keep this close.

Pick: Panama +1.5 (-114)
