  • New York has taken the first two games of this four-game series
  • Going back to last season, the Mets are 5-2 straight up in their last seven games at Washington

When it comes to facing the Washington Nationals, the New York Mets are really beginning to enjoy their visits to the nation’s capital.

A 2-0 start to the 2022 season improves the Mets’ straight-up record at Washington to 5-2 over the past seven games. Prior to that stretch, they’d endured a 1-7 SU skid away at the Nationals.

Just like Oddball in Kelly’s Heroes, oddsmakers are sending nothing but positive vibes to the Mets. New York is taking the diamond Saturday as -140 road favorites to win again over the Nationals. The Mets are also 5-2 against the run line in the last seven games played at Washington.

Firsts are foremost in this matchup. Righthander Bassitt is making his Mets debut. It’s also the first that he’ll be pitching for a National League team. As well, it’s the initial time facing the Nationals for the 33-year-old veteran.

Just about everything is new to Adon. The 23-year-old right-hander has seen action in one MLB game. He made an Oct. 3 start last season against the Boston Red Sox. Adon didn’t figure in the decision during a 7-5 loss.

Adon worked 5.1 innings in his big-league bow. He allowed six hits, one a home run and two earned runs.

Numbers-wise, Bassitt enjoyed his best year as a pro last season, going 12-4 for the Oakland A’s. His .750 winning percentage led the majors. Bassitt also posted personal bests for innings pitched (157.1) WHIP (1.06), hits per nine innings (7.3) and strikeouts/walks ratio (4.08).

While his Mets teammate Max Scherzer is the +500 chalk in the NL Cy Young Awards odds, bettors can access a +6000 betting line on Bassitt. He finished 10th in AL Cy Young balloting last season.

Nationals’ first baseman Josh Bell shows impressive numbers when facing Bassitt. In three at-bats, Bell has two hits and both of them are home runs. He’s driven in three runs via that pair of long balls.

No Mets batter has ever faced Adon. However, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso traditionally wears out Washington pitching. He’s a lifetime .373 hitter against the Nats, with an astonishing 21 homers in 244 at-bats. Alonso has driven in 50 runs and shows a .730 slugging percentage, .449 on-base percentage and 1.178 OPS.

Mets vs Nationals Prediction

Big things are expected of the Mets this season. They are the second betting choice in the NL East odds at +200 and show the third-shortest World Series odds among NL teams at +1400.

There’s not much to get excited about in Washington. The Nationals were last in the NL East in 2021 and look to be heading toward another crash in 2022. About the only bright spot is rightfielder Juan Soto. He’s the +300 chalk in the NL MVP odds.

Sending out an inexperienced hurler to face a talented veteran such as Bassitt, this looks to be setting up for another long night for the Nats. The Mets are off to a hot start and you should stay with the hot hand.

Pick: New York Mets RL -1.5 (+115).
