Both teams will try to strengthen their cases for NCAA Tournament berths when Memphis visits SMU in an American Athletic Conference game at 3 p.m. ET Sunday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas.

Memphis (15-8/9-4 AAC/4-5 road) ran its winning streak to six games Tuesday with an 81-74 victory at Cincinnati. SMU (18-6/9-3 AAC/12-0 home) lost for just the second time in its last nine games, falling at Temple 64-57 on Wednesday.

While Houston (10-2) leads the AAC, SMU and Memphis are right behind the Cougars in the standings.

Memphis is a 2.5-point favorite in a game that will be shown on ESPN. The Tigers are -140 picks on the moneyline line, giving them a 58.33% implied win probability.

 

Memphis Betting Outlook

Memphis is also on a roll against the spread, covering in its last five games. The Tigers have raised their season record to 10-12-1 but are 3-6 on the road.

Senior guard Tyler Harris had 15 points to lead five Memphis scorers in double figures in the win over Cincinnati. He has reached double figures in eight of his last 10 games after scoring 10 or more in just two of his first 13 games this season.

Junior guard Landers Nolley II had a fine all-round performance with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. Freshman Jalen Duren also scored 13 points while junior guard Lester Quinones added 12 points and freshman forward Josh Minott chipped in with 10 points.

Duren has scored in double digits in six straight games as he continues to live up to his billing as a five-star recruit. In addition to leading the team in scoring with 11.4 points a game, Duren paces the AAC with averages of 7.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots.

 

Quinones has a streak of five games in a row with double-figure points.

Senior forward DeAndre Williams (11.0) and freshman forward Emoni Bates (10.4) also are scoring in double digits. Williams is also grabbing 5.6 rebounds a game.

Memphis shot 53.4% (31 of 58) on Tuesday and drained 7 of 17 (41.2%) attempts from three-point range. The Tigers held Cincinnati to 23-of-64 (35.9%) shooting.

SMU Betting Outlook

SMU’s ATS record fell to 12-12 with the loss to Temple in which it played without standout senior guard Kendric Davis. The Mustangs are 6-6 against the number at home.

Davis sat out with an ankle injury but is likely to play Sunday. His 19.1 scoring average tops the AAC. He is also third in assists (4.8) and field goal percentage (44.3) while averaging 4.3 rebounds a game.

Senior forward Michael Weathers helped pick up the scoring slack with a season-high 22 points. He also had seven rebounds and four assists, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Owls.

Weathers’ twin brother, senior forward Marcus Weathers, added 15 points and 10 rebounds. It was the Duquesne transfer’s fifth double-double of the season but first since Jan. 15.

Weathers is averaging 12.1 points and has been in double digits in nine consecutive games. He is second in the AAC with 7.0 rebounds a game.

Freshman guard Zhuric Phelps, who was Mr. Basketball in Texas last season, contributed 10 points for his fourth double-figure games of the season and first since Jan. 12. He started in place of Davis.

Senior guard Emmanuel Bandoumel (10.7) is a third Mustangs player with a double-figure scoring average.

SMU shot 38.3% (23 of 60) on Wednesday, including a paltry 23.5% (4 of 17) from long distance. The Mustangs lost despite holding Temple to 30.9% (21 of 68) overall and 14.3% (3 of 21) from beyond the arc.

Memphis vs SMU Prediction

SMU beat Memphis 70-62 on Jan. 20 on the road for its second straight win over the Tigers and fourth in the last five games.

Davis topped the Mustangs with 20 points and Bandoumel scored 13. Mephis got 17 points from Harris and Duren had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Memphis playing its best basketball of the season but it’s hard to buck SMU at Moody Coliseum where the Mustangs are unbeaten this season.
