The Big Ten Tournament is in full swing and Thursday brings an intriguing second-round matchup between the #10 Maryland Terrapins (15-16, 9-12 Big Ten) and the #7 Michigan State Spartans (20-11, 11-9 Big Ten) at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The winner here will face #2 Wisconsin in the quarterfinals.

This will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with Michigan State winning both contests thus far. They enter as a slim 3-point favorite, despite coming out on top by a score of 77-67 last Sunday against Maryland.
MSU Dominating This Matchup
Tom Izzo’s group finished the season with a 3-7 record in their last 10 games, but they have typically dominated against Maryland, winning six of the previous nine meetings. However, the Terrapins didn’t make it easy on Sunday. The Spartans cruised into halftime with a 20-point lead but Maryland stormed back in the second half, going on a 19-2 run. MSU ultimately held them off, but it was no picnic.

Izzo’s squad was led by Malik Hall off the bench, who dropped 17 points. Three others finished in double-figures, including offensive standouts Tyson Walker and Gabe Brown, who are two of the Spartans’ best weapons. Despite the Terrapins giving them a scare, they played relatively well overall, shooting 39% from deep and outdueling Maryland in the paint. Michigan State’s three-point efficiency is one of their greatest strengths, ranking 10th in the nation with a 38.4% clip as a team.
Even though the Spartans finished the campaign with three losses in their last four outings, this group is fundamentally sound on both ends when clicking. They’ve notched wins over several impressive programs such as UConn, Purdue, Loyola-Chicago, and Wisconsin.

Terrapins Ended Season on High Note
Maryland really finished the season in a positive manner, winning four of their final six contests. That included victories over Ohio State, Penn State, and Minnesota. Although Michigan State has had the upper hand against them, the Terrapins showed guts last weekend. Eric Ayala was the leading catalyst in their failed comeback, scoring a team-high 19 points. Fatts Russell and Donta Scott also did their part, combining for 29 points.

The clear difference-maker in both games between Maryland and Michigan State was the lack of bench scoring for Danny Manning’s group. They had a measly six points from their second unit on Sunday as opposed to 33 from the Spartans’ bench. That being said, the Terrapins will need more from their starting five, especially Ayala, Scott, and Russell.

The Terrapins did impress at times this season, but they simply don’t have the same depth as the Spartans. Also, Maryland is just 14-17 ATS and 9-8 as underdogs. Michigan State is honestly just the better team and has a more complete squad. After winning by 10 last weekend, it’s safe to say the Spartans will easily cover the 3-point spread here.
