Iowa Betting Preview

Iowa has been a winning proposition against the spread this season with a 12-8 overall record but are 3-3 in away games.

Cold shooting, especially by sophomore forward Keegan Murray, cost Iowa against Purdue. The Big Ten’s leading scorer made just 4 of 11 field goal attempts and the Hawkeyes shot 37.5% (24 of 64) as a team. Murray did pull down nine rebounds.

Murray is averaging 22.4 points a game, the fourth-best mark in the nation, and has scored in double figures in 18 of 19 games this season. He is fourth in the Big Ten in rebounding with 8.4 a game and is also blocking 2.1 shots a game.

His twin brother, sophomore forward Kris Murray, picked up the scoring slack with 23 points and five rebounds in 24 minutes before fouling out. It was his second 20-point game of the season.

Kris Murray has a 10.6 scoring average.

Sophomore forward Patrick McCaffrey scored 11 points. The son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey reached double figures for the fifth time in six games while raising his average to 10.8.

Senior guard Jordan Bohannon is scoring 10.4 points a game for the Hawkeyes, who are seventh in the nation in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency with 117.9 points per 100 possessions.

Iowa’s defense was shaky Thursday as Purdue shot 61.2% (30 of 49) from the field, including 59.1% (13 of 22) on three-pointers. The Hawkeyes did force 15 turnovers.

Iowa fell behind by 18 points before cutting the deficit to 57-53 with 12:22 left but got no closer.

Penn State Betting Preview

Penn State had a five-game ATS winning streak before being the losing side in its last two games. The Nittany Lions are 8-9 against the number in 2021-22, including 4-5 at home.

Senior guard Jalen Pickett made 4 of 7 shots from beyond the arc in the loss at Indiana and finished with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. However, he was one of the few bright spots for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions shot 33.3% (20 of 60) from the field. They made just 6 of 36 (16.7%) field goal attempts in the first half and fell behind 46-17 by the break.

Pickett continued his fine first season in Happy Valley since transferring from Siena. He is averaging 13.4 points, 4.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds.

Pickett has a 10-game streak of scoring in double digits.

Senior forward John Harrar just missed his sixth double-double of the season by finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. He is averaging nearly a double-double with 10.3 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Harrar is second in the conference in rebounding.

Junior forward Seth Lundy has averages of 13.2 points and 5.6 rebounds. Senior guard Sam Sessoms is scoring 11.4 points, pulling down 3.5 rebounds and dishing 3.2 assists a game.

On Wednesday, Penn State allowed Indiana to shoot a remarkable 10 of 13 (76.9%) on three-pointers and 51.0% (26 of 51) overall. The Hoosiers scored the game’s first 12 points and the Nittany Lions never threatened.

Iowa vs Penn State Prediction

The teams will be playing for the second time in nine days after Iowa posted a 68-51 victory on Jan. 22 at home for its third straight win over Penn State.

Iowa was led by Keegan Murray’s 15 points and eight rebounds while Kris Murray added 13 points and Bohannon and McCaffrey scored 11 apiece. Pickett led Penn State with 14 points.

While Iowa is the better team, look for psychology to play a role in this one. The Hawkeyes figure to be a little overconfident while the Nittany Lions have something to prove.
