In the battle for Metropolitan Division supremacy, the Carolina Hurricanes clearly have the number of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canes have toppled the Pens in each of the past three meetings, as well as five of their past six games, positioning them well in the NHL playoff odds.

Carolina owns a 3-1 edge in the past four contests played in Pittsburgh. That’s including a 4-3 away verdict over the Penguins on Feb. 20. They’ve won both meetings with the Pens this season. However, each were one-goal decisions.

However, it’s the hometown Penguins that oddsmakers are tipping as -125 favorites to win this game. Pittsburgh is 3-4-3 straight up over the past 10 home games.

Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang has ascended to the 50-point plateau for the sixth time in his career. That’s tied for the lead among active NHL defensemen. Does it also put Letang into consideration in the Norris Trophy odds?

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin is two assists away from tying Sergei Fedorov (696) for the most assists by a Russian-born player in NHL history.

Defensive Shortcomings For Hurricanes

Carolina is currently without three regular defensemen. Tony DeAngelo, (upper-body) has missed eight games.

Jake Gardiner (upper-body) has been missing for 57 games, while Brendan Smith (upper-body) has been on the shelf for the past nine games. Smith was hurt the last time these two teams played in Pittsburgh.

Penguins defenseman Mike Matheson returned for Friday’s 5-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. He’d missed five games with an upper-body injury. That leaves just forward Jason Zucker (lower body) out for Pittsburgh. He’s been absent the past 21 games.

Frederik Andersen Back For Carolina

Carolina also got some good news on the injury front. Frederik Andersen, the Canes #1 goalie, was back between the pipes on Saturday afternoon in Philly.  He’d missed the past two games with an upper-body injury.

However, it’s unlikely that Andersen will be sent out by Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour to start back-to-back games as he returns from injury. So look for backup Antti Raanta to get the call in Pittsburgh

Hurricanes vs Penguins Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Hurricanes Antti Raanta 10-3-2 .918 2.31
Penguins Tristan Jarry 28-12-6 .921 2.33

Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry has reached the 20-win plateau for third consecutive season. He’s also matched a career high with three shutouts.

However, Jarry is just 2-4 in his past six decisions.

Hurricanes vs Penguins Pick & Prediction

Carolina shows more road games (18) than Pittsburgh has earned home victories (16) this season. Seven of the last 10 Hurricanes-Penguins games have gone under, so that +100 on the under six goals is tempting.

Pittsburgh blew a 2-0 in the last game against Carolina. The Canes have outscored the Pens 13-7 over the past three games.
