The Cleveland Guardians will be looking to snatch a game from the New York Yankees in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in the Bronx after losing the first two contests. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM ET. The Yankees won in comeback fashion on Saturday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Cleveland sends Aaron Civale to the hill for this matchup, while New York counters with ace Gerrit Cole, who is struggling early on.

The Yanks are a heavy -215 favorite for Sunday’s game and have won four of their last five.

Probable Pitchers

Cole has been rather disappointing in 2021, which is extremely unlike him. The veteran is 0-0 with a dismal 6.35 ERA through three starts, tossing just 11 innings and walking seven. He’s also surrendered eight earned runs and three homers. Nevertheless, his Cy Young odds still sit at an AL-best +550.

Last time out, the hard-throwing righty absolutely deteriorated against Detroit, lasting just 1.2 frames before Aaron Boone took the ball from him. Cole only allowed two earned, but he walked five hitters and his command was non-existent. On a more positive note, Cleveland’s lineup is hitting a dismal .091 off him. That’s a reason for optimism.

Cole vs Civale

0-0 Record 0-1
6.35 ERA 6.15
1.41 WHIP 1.64
.220 OBA .258

Civale meanwhile, isn’t doing much better this season. The righty has made two starts, pitching to a 6.14 ERA and 0-1 record in a mere 7.1 innings. He’s getting hit around as well, giving up five runs already and eight hits. A potent Giants lineup tagged Civale for three earned last week, chasing him after four innings.

However, the 26-year-old threw the ball extremely well in 2021 against the Yankees, posting a 1.59 ERA in two outings. He also held them to a .205 batting average.

Guardians Betting Analysis

Cleveland looked to have a win in the bag on Saturday, with closer Emmanuel Clase just one strike away from sealing the deal. Unfortunately, Isiah Kiner-Falefa smacked a game-tying double before Gleyber Torres laced a single to right field to win it for New York.

It wasn’t exactly a great performance from the Guardians though, especially offensively. They managed to collect just four hits, with Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges’ home runs accounting for most of the damage. There isn’t a lot of experience in their lineup against Cole, but essentially no one has enjoyed any success, aside from Jose Ramirez going 4 for 12 with two long balls.

Yankees Betting Analysis

While New York’s fans embarrassed themselves on Saturday by throwing objects at the Guardians outfielders, the Yanks are starting to wake up lately and even have World Series odds of +1300. Although they’re not scoring runs at a premium, there has been some clutch moments offensively. Kiner-Falefa led the way in Game 2 of the series, going 2 for 4 with that huge double in the bottom of the ninth. He’s actually been one of their most consistent hitters so far.

The Yankees will be hoping to jump on Civale early on Sunday, with a few different players squaring him up nicely in the past. D.J. LeMahieu, Torres, and Kyle Higashioka are also slashing over .300 off the righty, but it’s a small sample size for the latter.

Guardians vs Yankees Prediction

The Yankees have won seven of the last 10 meetings and I don’t see Cole collapsing again. It’s only a matter of time until he figures it out and it could very well be on Sunday. Take New York to cover the runline.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 (+105)
