Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich will be looking to book their ticket to the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday as they host RB Salzburg in the second leg of the Round of 16 at the Allianz Arena. The kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST.

Bayern is fresh off a rather disappointing 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen over the weekend as the attack really struggled to produce. As for Salzburg, they’re still flying high domestically, sitting 18 points clear at the top of the table.

The first leg between these two sides was an extremely tightly-contested affair, with Salzburg netting an early opener before Kingsley Coman saved Bayern with a 90th-minute equalizer on the road.

Bayern is a massive -590 favorite here and has never lost to an Austrian opponent in European competition, netting 15 times in five games while conceding only three goals.

Can Munich Get It Done on Home Soil?

By no surprise, the German champions are nine points ahead of Dortmund for top spot in the Bundesliga. However, Julian Nagelsmann’s men have lacked firepower in the final third lately. Saturday’s stalemate against Leverkusen was a clear example as Bayern absolutely dominated the ball and had a boatload of opportunities. Yet, they only managed to score once and it was within the first 20 minutes.

Then on February 26th, the Bavarians clashed with a very average Frankfurt side and it took a late Leroy Sane strike to give the side three points. Again, the chances were there, but Bayern simply couldn’t put them away. The always lethal Robert Lewandowski has failed to score in two straight appearances, which is frankly unlike him. Also, the Pole struggled to create any havoc in the first leg against Salzburg, not even registering a single attempt.

Nevertheless, Bayern is a massive favorite to come out victorious here and it does help that Nagelsmann’s group has only tasted defeat twice on home soil this term while winning all six of their Champions League group stage matches.  Munich will be missing a few key players through injury, however, with Corentin Tolisso, Alphonso Davies,  and Leon Goretzka all sidelined. Manuel Neuer should make his return in between the sticks though after recovering from a knee issue.

Salzburg Looking to Pull Off Upset

The Austrian giants have been a provider of some fine young talent over the last few years, including Erling Haaland and Dominik Szoboszlai. Well, their current core showed exactly what they’re capable of a few weeks back against Bayern, who are +450 favorites in the Champions League odds right now. 20-year-old Chukwubuike Adamu came on in just the 12th minute after striker Noah Okafor had to exit due to a hamstring problem.

The Nigerian quickly made his presence felt, slotting home a fine goal courtesy of an ambitious yet impressive run from strike partner Karim Adeyemi, who has actually been on the radar of Bayern. While Salzburg was outplayed, they managed to muster up numerous clear-cut chances against a very rock-solid Bayern backline.

Matthias Jaissle’s side showed well in the group stages as well, going 3-1-2 and finishing as runners-up to Lille. Adeyemi is undoubtedly the main catalyst up top for Salzburg in the competition, netting three times and providing an assist. Although Salzburg will be looking to make history and knock off one of the UCL favorites, the squad has yet to win on the road in the current European campaign, suffering defeat twice and tying once. That’s not exactly a good sign heading into Tuesday’s encounter.

Bayern Munich vs Salzburg Prediction

As much as Salzburg was a delight to watch in the first leg, I honestly don’t see them eliminating Bayern on home soil. Despite their lack of finishing as of late, Munich is still a world-class side that can always turn up when needed. The moneyline offers basically no value, though. That being said, I do like the idea of taking both teams to score and Bayern to win because the hosts have conceded at least once in each of their last four games at Allianz Arena.
