The Phillies opened up as hefty -215 moneyline favorites in a contest that features a total of 9.5 runs. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET at the Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park, with a sun-cloud mix and 48 degree temperatures in the forecast.

Probable Pitchers

Oakland will give the ball to 26-year-old Daulton Jefferies, a first round pick back in 2016. The right-hander has made just two career starts, and was used primarily in a relief role in 2021.

He projected to be the team’s fifth starter but has been moved up due to the trade of Sean Manaea, and the injury to James Kaprielian.

If spring training was any indication, Oakland may need to call on its bullpen early on Sunday. Jefferies was abysmal during exhibition play, posting a 10.45 ERA over just 10 innings.

Philly meanwhile, will counter with 28-year-old Zach Eflin. The right-hander has been working his way back from knee surgery which cut his 2021 season short, and so far the early returns are positive.

Eflin was brilliant in spring training, posting a 0.96 ERA over three appearances, while striking out 11 in 9.1 innings of work.

His Achilles heel throughout his six-year career has been keeping the ball in the yard but, fortunately for him, the Oakland lineup as it currently stands is devoid of power.

Athletics vs Phillies Betting Analysis

Oakland mustered just five hits in Saturday’s 4-2 loss, after recording only six hits the night before. They lost three of their top-four sluggers over the offseason, including Matt Olson and Matt Chapman who combined for 64 home runs in 2021.

The Athletics are projected to finish with a run differential of -104 according to FanGraphs, the fifth worst mark in baseball. So far they’re right on track after dropping their first two outings by a combined total of 13-7.

By contrast, the Phillies are projected to finish with 88 wins in the MLB win totals, the fifth most in the National League. Should they accomplish that they’ll likely snap their postseason drought, which dates back to 2011.

Philadelphia’s offense has been clicking through two games led by its big two offseason additions. The team shelled out $179 million in contacts to Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, and so far the duo has rewarded them with a pair of hits each including a home run.

Reigning Most Valuable Player of the Year Bryce Harper has yet to be a factor, recording just one hit in seven at-bats. He has however scored three runs through two games, and is a top-three contender in the NL MVP odds.

Oakland is going to be swept early and often this season, so they might as well get the first one out of the way. The Athletics bats are sorely lacking pop, and the positive spring training vibes surrounding Eflin should continue in one of the softest matchups he’ll face all season.

The Phillies appear to be a legit threat in the NL East, and after opening up last season with a sweep of the eventual champion Braves, I’m betting they get the brooms out again in their first series of 2022.
