Davidovich Fokina’s First Masters 1000 Semifinal
The 22-year old hit a new career high on Friday when he upset 10th seed Taylor Fritz 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal.
Davidovich Fokina had to piece together a comeback when he went down after losing the first set. He came out swinging in the second set, and made adjustments to his game, that ultimately led to the win.

The Spaniard has really made a name for himself this week after defeating World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round. He’ll be looking to continue all the momentum that he’s gathered this week into this semifinal match against Dimitrov.

Unseeded Dimitrov Reaches the Final Four
Much like his semifinal opponent, Dimitrov had to figure out a way to win the match after losing the second set, forcing a decider. He eventually managed to secure the upset over 11th seed Hubert Hurkacz, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7(7)-6(2).
A bit more is on the line for Dimitrov when it comes to this semifinal. If he were to have a final appearance here in Monte-Carlo, it looks like he’d be able to secure a Top 20 spot in the rankings on Monday.

The Bulgarian has had a pretty great tournament so far, having also upset fourth seed Casper Ruud in straight sets on Thursday. But Davidovich Fokina will be another test for the 30-year old, as he looks to extend his 11-6 record on the year.

Where’s the Best Bet?
Will it be experience or the youth that comes out on top Saturday morning? Grigor Dimitrov has complete a few hundred more matches than the 22-year old Davidovich Fokina, including eight titles. But the young Spaniard has shown that he’s here to stay this week.
Davidovich Fokina plays well on clay. It’s possible he plays better than Grigor on clay. But Grigor has been a bit more consistent over the past few tournaments.
It does seem that it’s too close to make a smart bet on who will win outright for this match. It sometimes is at this point in a tournament. So if we’re looking beyond the winner, distance can be the next best thing to look at. And in this case, it seems worth it.
