49ers vs Rams Recent Results

The Rams (14-5, 6-3 home) are coming off a 30-27 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Los Angeles has seven wins in its last eight games.

49ers vs Rams History

The California rivals will be playing for the 136th time with the 49ers holding a 75-67-3 series lead.

The 49ers, though, have beaten the Rams six straight times. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan is 7-3 against Los Angeles counterpart and close friend Sean McVay. Surprisingly, both coaches are out of the top five in the latest 2022 NFL Coach of the Year odds.

While the Rams won the NFC title this season, the 49ers won both meetings. San Francisco rolled to a 31-10 victory Nov. 15 at home then rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit to win 27-24 in overtime on Jan. 9 at Inglewood in the regular season finale.

49ers Offense vs Rams Defense

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is the key to the 49ers’ offense, particularly with the way he is often deployed as a running back.

Including the playoffs, Samuel has 1,963 yards from scrimmage with 1,487 receiving and 476 rushing. He is averaging 17.9 yards a reception, 6.0 yards a rush and has scored 15 touchdowns.

Samuel has also thrown a touchdown pass this season, his 45-yard kickoff return last week set up the 49ers’ tying field goal against the Packers.

Samuel has helped offset lackluster play from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the Niners’ two playoff games. Garoppolo has completed just 27-of-44 passes for 303 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Rams need a big game from defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The seven-time All-Pro had 12.5 sacks in the regular season but none in two games against the 49ers.

Rams Offense vs 49ers Defense

The Rams have showed versatility in their two playoff victories.

They ran for 140 yards in beating the Arizona Cardinals 34-11 in the wild card round. Matthew Stafford then threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns against the Buccaneers last week while Cooper Kupp continued his magnificent season, catching nine passes for a career-high 183 yards and a score. The triple-crown receiving leader is third behind just Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady in the 2022 NFL MVP odds.

The playoff victories were the first of Stafford’s career after he spent the first 12 seasons with the woebegone Detroit Lions before being traded to the Rams last offseason.

In the two regular season losses against the 49ers, Stafford was just 47-of-73 passing for 481 yards with four touchdowns and four picks. San Francisco often used just a four-man pass rush and forced Stafford to try to beat its coverage.

Defensive end Nick Bosa’s 6.5 career playoff sacks are one off the 49ers’ franchise record set by Hall of Famer Charles Haley.

49ers vs Rams Injury Report

49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams (ankle) is listed as questionable after getting hurt in the second half against Green Bay and missing practice all this week.

If the All-Pro selection can’t play, Colton McKivitz will take his place.

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. (ankle) is also questionable.

Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth is expected to return from a knee injury. Joseph Noteboom (chest), who had been filling in for Whitworth, is doubtful, while wide receiver Van Jefferson (knee) and safety Taylor Rapp (concussion) are questionable.

49ers vs Rams Prediction

The 49ers are trying to become the first team since the 1966 Kansas City Chiefs to win on the road in four straight weeks. San Francisco has thrived away from home this season and clearly isn’t intimidated by the Rams.

Look for the 49ers to at least get under the number, if not win outright.
